KATSINA LAWMAKERS 'II SUPPORT NO TO GMO's LAW

Katsina State House of Assembly shows its readness to supports No to Genetically Modified Organism law when it come to the house and pass into law through out the State.
The representative of Katsina State House of Assembly Kabir Idris promised legislative action as soon as the issue reached the Assembly. He said this during campaign against Genetically Modified Organism organised by GMO Free Nigeria lead by Katsina State Coordinator Mrs. Gloria Okon on last Friday 13th of this month, 2024 in Katsina.
The Katsina State Coordinator of Genetically Modified Organism GMO Free Nigeria Mrs. Gloria Okon has called on the Katsina State Government to support programme. Mrs. Gloria Okon made this appeal during a sensitization programme organized by GMO-Free Nigeria.
She emphasized the potential dangers of GMOs on health, the environment and the future of agriculture, urging immediate action to protect local farming practices.
"There is a need on Government to stand with farmers and ensure sustainable agricultural methods that do not compromise public health or the environment. The event brought together key stakeholders, including the representative of the Katsina State Ministry of Environment, Alhaji Muhammad Nasir Ilyas, Assistant Secretary of the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria -RIFAN Katsina chapter, Alhaji Mansir Ibrahim and the Katsina State Chairman of Maize Farmers Association of Nigeria Aminu Ahmed Shekare", she said.
Alhaji Muhammad Nasir Ilyas who represent Ministry of Environment highlighted the environmental implications of GMOs, warning of potential degradation of soil fertility and biodiversity loss. On their part on behalf of Rice Farmers, Alhaji Mansir Ibrahim expressed concern and the long-term danger for food security.
On the other hand, the Chairman of Maize Farmers Association of Nigeria Aminu Ahmed Shekare underscored the health risks associated with GMO consumption, urging the State Government to prioritize public awareness campaigns and enforce strict regulations on GMO imports.
The speakers during the event called for a robust policy framework to regulate GMOs in Katsina State, urging the State Government to promote organic and indigenous farming practices.
One of the attendees of the programme name Hauwa said, this is the first time she heard about this GMO and its effects to our healh. Hauwa the 'Aware suya' said, right from the place, she will concentrate on our local foods.
